The hidden risk in automotive supply chains

Most automotive manufacturers can measure supplier emissions. Almost none can see process heat. It is the largest addressable source of Cat.1 emissions, and spend-based reporting cannot distinguish it.

THE PROBLEM

The footprint sits where data can't see it

Before a component reaches an assembly line it is cast, forged, treated, coated and cured, almost all of it on fossil fuels. Two suppliers with identical spend can differ by an order of magnitude, and spend-based data cannot tell them apart. Leading OEMs have cut upstream Scope 3 by 2% since 2017, while their Tier 1 suppliers have moved in the opposite direction.

Clean heat stalls at financing, not feasibility.


The technology works. Industrial heat pumps cover everything up to 200°C, including pre-treatment, cleaning and paint shop heating. Electric boilers reach 400°C.

What stops projects is rarely the equipment. It is that suppliers lack the finance or the internal expertise, buyers cannot fund thousands of sites, and banks will not fund uncertainty.
